About Rick

Following a highly successful international career representing both public and private interests in the fields of industrial relations, human rights, international trade, finance and social policy, Rick established himself has a Vancouver-based international consultant in 1996.

In addition to the breadth of his international professional experience, Rick is a popular seminar leader in the area of leadership and personal/professional development in both organizational and private practice settings.  (Go to What Rick Offers for further information).  A Senior Associate in the Aitken Leadership Group, www.aitkenleadership.com Rick facilitates high level leadership development seminars and interventions across North America as well as delivering high performance coaching for executives. Rick holds a degree in therapeutic counseling, and has facilitated thousands of hours of group and individual counseling as a faculty member and former Executive Director of The Haven Institute. Using his wide experience and an impressive array of strategic planning skills, Rick brings a wealth of knowledge to his busy private practice as an Insight or Life Coach.

During his international career Rick had the great privilege of conversing with some of the world’s top political and organizational leaders and Nobel Laureates. He led international delegations in dialogue with several heads of government including Mikael Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan and Nelson Mandela. In 1989 Rick organized and hosted the visit of Nobel Laureate Lech Walesa to Canada and was with Mr. Walesa when the world first celebrated the news of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  

As a former head of the Immigration and Refugee Board for Western Canada, Rick managed seven courts and supervised more than 18 independent immigration adjudicators (judges) responsible for deciding more than 3000 matters per year. Many of the innovations Rick put in place during this assignment became national practices and continue to assist the Canadian government to improve its effectiveness in dealing with immigration backlogs. Rick continues his international work as the Americas Representative for the International Association of Refugee Law Judges which promotes the development and application of international legal standards to the refugee determination processes of countries worldwide.

Rick knows how to apply state-of-the-art human change technology to maximum effect. Intimately familiar with the core competencies, challenges, and creative possibilities of effective personal and organizational leadership, Rick has a first-hand appreciation for the stresses associated with rapid change in the 21st century. For the past 30 years he has effectively facilitated positive and lasting change in others. He is dedicated to supporting those on the front lines, where effective application of “soft skills” translates into “hard profits” and increased efficiencies.

Rick commutes to Vancouver by floatplane from his Gulf Island home where he resides with his wife and family. His hobbies include hiking, sports fishing and reading the classics. He is fluent in English and Spanish and he has a good working knowledge of French. He has lived and worked outside North America on numerous occasions.
